What does the notch mean on the head of a cylinder of a 1971 ford 360 engine?

I have two books im looking at, one says the identification #needs to be toward the inside of the engine and the other says that the mysterious notch needs to toward the middle, but they are on opposite sides so I need to know which way before I install

Are we talking about the mark on the top of the piston? If so I have never seen ID numbers on them. Only if its an oversize piston it may have something like .40 on it showing it is .40 thousands of an inch over size. They usually have a small arrow or
